History of Concrete Concrete is a mixture of various materials such as sand, gravel, and cement. When mixed with water, the materials combine rapidly and become hard, binding all materials into a solid mass. Concrete dates back before 3000 B.C. where Egyptians mixed mud and straw to bind bricks and make mortar for the pyramids. Early 300 B.C. to around 500 A.D. the Romans built baths, Coliseums, and Pantheon, etc. In the 18 hundreds, concrete use expanded to the building of bridges, factories, lighthouses, and roads, etc. During the 1900's we used concrete to build massive dams, sports domes, and skyscrapers. Concrete has come a long way, today scientists have mixed chemicals, fibers, and hardeners to cement to enhance the qualities of concrete.
So Why Concrete Homes For thousands of years people have demonstrated the powerful use of concrete. Most of the historical structures that still stand today were made from some form of rock and/or concrete mixture. Would it not be nice to build a house that could be around for generations to come! Why do we continue to build homes that termites can eat, that can get shredded by powerful storms or destroyed by fire? We have the technologies, the know how, and the capability to build better and stronger homes. The standard stigma with building concrete homes is that they are boxy, mono color, lacking personality. However true in the commercial industry, it does not carry over to residential homes. Today, concrete homes appear, even to the trained eye, to be a facsimile of traditional wood homes, with all the interior and exterior decor that you would expect with a wood/metal framed house. So why not build a home that can last, something that can weather the tests of time, be energy efficient, environmentally friendly, and have all the comforts of a traditional wood/metal home. The only limiting factor is you're imagination, come join the growing community of concrete home owners!
